William Jefferson -- who is not directly related to William Jefferson Clinton -- is serving in the US House of Representatives. He represents the great state of Louisiana. William Jefferson was recorded on video tape accepting bribe money. The $90,000 in cash was recovered from a freezer in his home during an FBI raid.
Within days, House Minority leader Nancy Pelosi ordered William Jefferson to resign his seat. Pelosi said that would be "in the interest of upholding the high ethical standard of the House Democratic Caucus."
That provoked the Black Congressional Caucus leadership to proclaim that Pelosi was going too far. The Black Congressional Caucus threatened to launch a public campaign against Pelosi which would jeopardize the Democrat's chances for retaking the US House in November election.
Within days of being threatened by the Congressional Black Caucus, Pelosi dropped her demand that William Jefferson resign his powerful position on the House Ways & Means Committee in exchange for their promise to not campaign against her. Pelosi's retreat followed her closed door meeting with the CBC.
A Congressional Black Caucus aide said the truce between Pelosi and the CBC is simply, "We won't escalate this any further if you don't escalate it any further."
Let's get this clearly understood.
What might the Congressional Black Caucus have said in a campaign against Pelosi? Perhaps that "Pelosi is too ethical"? Or that "Pelosi is not willing to have the US House polluted by a member abusing his authority by taking bribes and then ostensibly voting favors in return"?
Why would Pelosi object to be characterized as an ethical leader? Especially when she is the one often accusing Republicans of supporting a "culture of corruption".
Why would Pelosi's constituents object to Pelosi being portrayed as an ethical leader?
Why might the Black Congressional Caucus not want the high ethical standard of the House Democratic Caucus upheld?
Why might the Black Congressional Caucus even consider hurting Democrat's chances of regaining control of the US House of Representatives in the November election? Do they not want their political party -- the Democrat Party -- to be in control and serve all of America as ethically as their William Jefferson?
