Alabama Is Globalizing

  ...And Preparing To Prosper

The huge German steelmaker ThyssenKrupp AG announced it will build a $4.19 billion steel plant in Mobile, Alabama. The project could create thousands of jobs.
Louisiana was the other finalist, and both states offered millions of dollars in tax breaks and other incentives to get the plant.
Alabama's Governor Bob Riley celebrated ThyssenKrupp's decision. He said, "A project this size, with this amount of economic impact, comes along perhaps once in a generation."
Globalization is a two-way street. No. Wait. Globalization means globalization. Many nations, most industries, and many companies will benefit by expanding globally.
Globalization should not be resisted. Resistance of the inevitable is counterproductive anyway. Join in, develop, and profit.
The plant will open in 2010. It is expected to employ up to 2,700 workers when operating at full capacity. It will create up to 38,000 related jobs including suppliers, transportation, dining, and entertainment work.
The total facility is planned to have an annual capacity of 4.1 million metric tons of carbon steel end products.
The plant will be near Calvert, a town of about 500 residents. Calvert is so small that residents now must go to the post office to pick up mail because there is no street delivery.
