President Bush visited New Orleans
on the 2-year anniversary of hurricane Katrina. Bush said, "We
understand". |
|
He
understands? If he understands, he is
less smart than people thought. He should
have said, "We do not understand how you
could have come such a short distance after
so long". |
|
The
US government committed $127 billion in
resources and tax relief in the two years
since hurricanes Katrina and Rita for New
Orleans and the Gulf Coast region. Following
World War II the US
government spent an inflation adjusted $107
billion between 1947 and 1951 on the
Marshall Plan to rebuild 16 European nations. |
|
How
can a so-called major city such as New
Orleans not have rebuilt and recovered
after two years... at least to an extent
greater than New Orleans has? Cities
from Florida to Mississippi have rebuilt
in less than two years after suffering
similar devastation from hurricanes.
Many of those cities rebuilt and are
more productive than before the
hurricane damage.
|
|
Many
of those cities did not have the large
corporate presence that New Orleans has. It
is no surprise that corporations are
hesitating to rebuild in New Orleans where
so many people continue to sit and wait for
more handouts from the Army Corps of
Engineers, the federal government and their
state. |
|
The
federal government has already given the
City of New Orleans more millions of dollars
than the State of Louisiana's state-wide
annual budget! |
